What is Green Republicanism?

Green republicanism is an emerging perspective in contemporary republican political theory, theorised by such as John Barry and Jorge Pinto. This paper aims to clarify and give a preliminary defence of green republicanism. I suggest that the core of green republicanism is the complementarity claim: republican politics and green economics are mutually supportive, making it compelling to integrate them as green republicanism. Having developed the complementarity claim, the paper considers two challenges to green republicanism: the parochialism claim that republican politics is too local in focus to address a global green transition; and the austerity claim that the integration of republican with green commitments (such as to degrowth or post-growth) revives the long-standing criticism that republicanism is too austere for modern societies. The paper shows how green republicanism has resources to respond to both challenges. Throughout, I show also how green republicanism is not only an academic theoretical construct but a perspective implicit in green political advocacy (e.g., in relation to proposals for a Green New Deal).
