 ired.Inquiries: a.c.moiteirodasneves@uu.nl\n\n\n\nWhat is Green Republican
ism?\n\n\n\nGreen republicanism is an emerging perspective in contemporary
republican political theory\, theorised by such as John Barry and Jorge P
into. This paper aims to clarify and give a preliminary defence of green r
epublicanism. I suggest that the core of green republicanism is the comple
mentarity claim: republican politics and green economics are mutually supp
ortive\, making it compelling to integrate them as green republicanism. Ha
ving developed the complementarity claim\, the paper considers two challen
ges to green republicanism: the parochialism claim that republican politi
cs is too local in focus to address a global green transition\; and the au
sterity claim that the integration of republican with green commitments (s
uch as to degrowth or post-growth) revives the long-standing criticism tha
t republicanism is too austere for modern societies. The paper shows how g
reen republicanism has resources to respond to both challenges. Throughout
\, I show also how green republicanism is not only an academic theoretical
construct but a perspective implicit in green political advocacy (e.g.\,
in relation to proposals for a Green New Deal).\n
