SUMMARY:Speaker Series with Dr. Mark Reiff
DESCRIPTION:\nAnalytical Fascism: What Stares Back When One Stares into the
  De-Enlightenment. 15 May\, 2025\, 17:00-18:30 (CEST)\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www
 .youtube.com/watch?v=5lYgrhak-4k&amp\;feature=youtu.be\n\n\n\n\nTo know mo
re about Mark Reiff's work visit his website\, where you can find more det
ails of his publications and previous talks. \n\n\n\nThe Speaker Series Ev
ent was based on Mark Reiff's recent book Analytical Fascism: What Stares
Back When One Stares into the De-Enlightenment (George Washington Universi
ty\, 2024) (available here). Other publications that might be of interest
include 'Trump and the End of Liberalism' (The Critique\, January-February
\, 2017) and 'Two Theories of Economic Liberalism' (The Adam Smith Review\
, 2017). The list of Mark Reiff's publications is available on his website
. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the session: While it is clear what those attracte
d to fascism today are against\, it is less clear what they are for. Not i
n the sense of how they want to remake society—this is usually clear eno
ugh. What is less clear is the fundamental values that are driving their d
esire to create a different kind of order. Compounding this difficulty\, t
oo many liberals are stubbornly sticking to some conventional beliefs: tha
t human nature is as liberals think it is\, not something that is fundamen
tally disputed\; that facts are what liberals think they are\, even if som
e people choose to ignore them\; and that everybody is pursuing basically
the same conception of the good\, even if some of them are deluded as to w
here we are now and how to get where we want to go.\n\n\n\nBut this move t
o the right is not being driven simply by mistakes\; it is a principled mo
 ve\, backed by a coherent\, consistent\, and historically well-sourced val
ue system\, even if this value system is perverse. Fascism has its own con
ception of the moral subject\; of the need for a rigid social hierarchy of
men\; of the nature of individual rights\; and of the importance of purit
y in blood\, soil\, and ideology. It believes in the unity of the people\,
the leader\, and&nbsp\;the state\; it embraces very different and (to lib
erals) often disturbing moral ends\; and it employs starkly different rule
s of social interaction. And it believes\, in the end\, that this all lead
s to the greatest expression of democracy ever invented.\n\n\n\nAbout the
