SUMMARY:Speaker Series with Dr. Elizabeth Anderson
DESCRIPTION:\nFrom Limitarianism to a Better World\, September 19 at 4pm (C
 EST)\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqzyWDekPCQ\n\n\n\n\nAbout t
he session: After offering additional reasons for setting limits on indivi
dual wealth to those advanced by Ingrid Robeyns\, I turn to two key questi
ons about limitarian policy. First\, how should we limit wealth? Second\,
what should we do with the resources that are no longer captured by the ex
tremely wealthy? I shall focus on predistributive&nbsp\;strategies for lim
iting wealth\, including radical reduction of financial activity that does
not serve the real economy\, and elimination of other zero- and negative-
value-added business strategies. Finance should be redirected to community
needs\, particularly for care work and climate resilience. The jobs there
by created can be designed with the aim of developing the capabilities of
service recipients and workers alike\, in the context of building cooperat
ive rather than antagonistic social relationships--a key to rebuilding our
fraying democracies.&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Elizabeth Anderso
n is John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy and Women
’s Studies at University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, where she has taught
since 1987.&nbsp\; She is the author of Value in Ethics and Economics (Har
vard UP\, 1993)\, The Imperative of Integration (Princeton UP\, 2010)\, Pr
ivate Government (How Employers Rule our Lives\, and Why We Don’t Talk A
bout It) (Princeton UP\, 2017)\, Hijacked: How Neoliberalism Turned the Wo
rk Ethic Against Workers\, and How Workers Can Take It Back (Cambridge UP\
, 2023)\, and numerous\, widely reprinted articles in journals of philosop
hy\, law\, and economics. &nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\nTo register for this online eve
nt\, please use this registration form.\n\n\n\nAny additional questions ab
out the Vision Speaker Series\, please email Catarina Neves at a.c.moiteir
