Systemic Risk and the Transformation of Democracy; 15 January 2025 – 15h00-16h30

Democracies today are faltering in the face of large-scale systemic risks, such as financial risk and climate change, which are giving rise to new forms of emergency and crisis governance. This lecture diagnoses our era of systemic risk and asks: how can the politics of systemic risk become democratic?

Steven Klein is a senior lecturer in political theory with the Department of Political Economy, King’s College London. His research focuses on democratic theory, critical social theory, theories of political economy and the welfare state, the theory and politics of European integration, and the history of European social and political thought (especially of 19th and 20th century Germany). His first book, The Work of Politics: Making a Democratic Welfare State (Cambridge University Press, 2020), examines the democratic potential of struggles over welfare institutions. He is the PI for Systemic Risk and the Transformation of Democracy, a four-year project funded by UKRI (successfully evaluated for an ERC Starting Grant).
